French tutors for primary school

Worth being honest about one difference before you book. A child picking up English at this age is already swimming in it: games, videos, songs, other children. French is not like that here. For most primary pupils the lesson is very nearly the only French in the week, so a weekly hour with nothing around it fades between sessions rather than compounding. Ask any tutor you are considering what they expect to happen on the other six days, and be suspicious of one who says nothing needs to. The gain at this age is real and it has a closing date. A young child usually meets French by ear before reading much of it, which is the one point in a life when French spelling cannot mislead them yet. They copy the nasal vowels, the u and the r while those are still just noises to imitate rather than letters to puzzle over, and what they take in now tends to stay. Older beginners spend years unpicking a pronunciation they built out of the written word. Sitting in the same room helps more here than it would with an older pupil, for a very ordinary reason. Pronouncing French properly requires a seven year old to pull faces, and children copy a person who is there doing it far more readily than a face on a screen. The tutor also sees the mouth itself, rather than a compressed video of it.
