Chemistry tutors for primary school

Before you book anything, it is worth working out what is actually going wrong, because a lot of first year chemistry trouble is not chemistry. The moment a lesson asks how much of one substance reacts with how much of another, it is asking about ratios, and a child who never quite got those in maths meets them again here in a lab coat. If that is the problem, chemistry lessons will not fix it and maths lessons will. Someone worth paying tells you that in the first hour rather than the tenth. What is genuinely new is the notation. Chemistry arrives carrying a second alphabet: symbols, subscripts, arrows, state labels, and the convention that a small number in front means something different from a small number underneath. Almost nobody is given time to learn to read it, and a child who is guessing at the writing cannot follow the reasoning even when the reasoning is easy. Sitting in the same room has one advantage a screen does not. The tutor sees the whole page, the crossings out and the order things were written in, which shows where the thinking stopped rather than only where the number went wrong.
