Chemistry tutors for middle school students

If your child comes home saying chemistry is the good lesson and then keeps bringing back disappointing marks, those two things are not in conflict. At this stage the memorable part of the subject and the examined part have almost nothing to do with each other. What sticks is the demonstration: the flame changing colour, the thing that fizzed, the smell nobody was expecting. What gets marked is a short list of written operations done accurately, and none of those happen at the front bench. Before booking anybody, do the free version of the diagnosis. Take the last two marked tests and read the lost marks rather than the total. Almost always they fall into two or three repeating shapes, and the shapes are duller than anyone admits: a formula written with the wrong number of one element, an equation left unbalanced, a calculation where the answer was right and the unit was missing or wrong. That list is what you would be buying help with, and you can write it down in ten minutes without paying anyone. Then look for somebody who will work on that list rather than reteach the year. It is a narrower job than it sounds and a duller one, which is worth saying plainly: expect sessions that look like the same four kinds of question repeated until the mistakes stop, not a tour of the periodic table. If a tutor's first instinct is to start at the beginning of the textbook, they have not looked at the tests.
