Here is something school rarely catches: a child can read German perfectly well and still write a version of it that is not correct. German joins nouns into one long word, capitalises them, and carries meaning on the umlaut. When it is typed, the umlaut is the first thing to go, the capital follows, and the compound splits into two words. All of it still looks comprehensible, so nobody reacts. Homework is rarely read that closely, and the pupil concludes that this is how it is done. This is where a shared screen does what a table cannot. The tutor is not looking at a finished exercise book a week later, but at text as it appears, in the moment the hand chooses between the bare letter and the right one. The error gets corrected where it was made, rather than later, after it has been repeated fifteen times. The repair is mechanical and you do it once: set a German keyboard or the umlaut shortcuts, test it on one paragraph, and from then on simply stop accepting work without umlauts. That is a rule you can enforce with no German at all. It is fair to say when this is not for you. If your child writes everything by hand in an exercise book and is marked on that, typing is not what you are buying and the room is the better choice. Check how work is actually submitted before you decide. When you write to a tutor, ask whether the pupil will type during the lesson in a shared document or send finished work in advance.
