English tutors for university students

At school someone was still teaching you the language. At university that stops, and the assumption replaces it: the reading list is in English, half the sources are, the seminar runs in it, and your work is marked on how well you write it by people whose job is the subject rather than the language. The gap that opens is rarely vocabulary. It is convention. A lab report, a literature review, a case note and an essay in history each have rules about structure, hedging and how you refer to other people's work, and nobody states those rules anywhere. Students are expected to absorb them from reading, which works slowly and unevenly. The second thing nobody tells you is that your supervisor will correct your content and leave your language alone. They will write that the argument in section three needs support, and say nothing about the tense that has been wrong in every paragraph since first year, because correcting it is not their job and they can see past it. So errors survive for years, then surface when something is being assessed by a stranger. If that is your situation, bring real work: a marked assignment, a draft chapter, the reading you cannot get through fast enough.
