English grammar tutors

There is a particular kind of student who does not sound like they need grammar lessons. They read novels without a dictionary, they hold a conversation without anyone slowing down for them, and then the essay comes back with half the marks gone on things nobody ever mentioned out loud. Speech forgives a missing article and a wrong tense because the listener patches it silently. Writing does not, and an examiner is paid to notice. The same thing happens at work: an email that is perfectly clear can still read as careless, which is a judgement about you rather than about your English. Sitting with a tutor over a printed page and a pen suits this better than most things do. You write, they mark, and then you go through why each mark is there, which is exactly what an exam will do to you later without the explanation. Bring your own writing, marked or unmarked, and ask the tutor to grade a page cold in the free first lesson. What comes back will tell you where the marks are actually going.
