Online lessons for complete beginners

Starting a language from zero as an adult is mostly an embarrassment problem rather than a learning one. Grown people who are competent all day are suddenly mispronouncing words a child would get right, and in a class of eight that is enough to keep most of them quiet for a term. One to one solves it at the root: nobody else hears the first attempts, and the tutor has heard far worse. Beginners also need frequency more than length. Two short sessions a week beat one long one, because vocabulary decays fast at the start and forty minutes is about as long as concentration holds when everything is new. The first month is where most people quietly stop, which is the real argument for a fixed weekly slot with someone expecting you. Most tutors give a free first lesson, and going in with no preparation at all is fine.
